Oxley game 04.12.2011

Oxley game 04.12.2011

13 players attended the Oxley game, our final game for the 2011 season.

With 1st place already decided (Ian Smith) it was just a nice no pressure game to round off the year. But it did produce our joint 2nd place-getters on the table, so congratulation to Janine Walker and Mark Coster for their very consistent play throughout the 2011 season.

The winner on the day was a very high flying Paul Wright with a huge 47pts (I think there is a handicap that will have a prune for the New Year) well done Paul.

Many thanks to all those who turned up at Oxley and indeed all of you who managed to join us during the year be it for just the one or many more games, we at the GUSGC hope to see all of you and hopefully some more (tell a friend) for the start of the new season in Feb 2011 (12th at Virginia – 6.56am)

Thanks also to all those people (committee members and non committee members) who have helped out, obviously doing all the normal committee stuff, but also the small stuff collecting cards/monies/posting reports to site/putting out markers etc etc it all makes our little club run smoothly & means that no one person gets lumbered with all the work.

Now to the results for Oxley:

1st place on 47pts – Paul Wright
2nd place on 38pts – Mike O’Neill
3rd place on 37pts – Janine Walker

NTP on the 9th – Mike O’Neill
NTP on the 5h – Not Taken
MLD – Tom Boyd
LLD – Janine Walker

Regards,
Paul (Captain)

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you, hope to see you all back with new golfing goodies in 2012.

Wynnum game 20.11.2011

Wynnum game 20.11.2011

The GUSGC CHAMPION for 2011 – Mr Ian Smith

12 players attended the Wynnum game, a glorious day on a course which was in very good condition as Wynnum have their prestigious Pro/Am event taking place in a week’s time, so we lucked out.

Ian Smith made the game (and got a NTP) to finally wrap up the Fed Up Cup again for the second year running, congratulations to him for another very consistent year, which as our groups low marker clearly points to the way we would all like to play, that magic word “consistently” (well not bad) I’ll ask Rodney if you do not mind to capture an image of the carry over champion at some stage for the site (As now he has won he will not be at the last game of the year) So that we can all worship him.

Many thanks to all those who turned up, I hope to see lots of you for the final game of the year in less than two weeks time.

Now to the results of the game (I’m very pleased with the following)

Wynnum results:

1st place on 42pts – Paul Lockwood-Lee (Yippee!)
2nd place on 40pts – Mark Coster
3rd place on 38pts – Tom Boyd

NTP on the 6th – George Chapman
NTP on the 16h – Ian Smith
MLD – Rodney Topor
LLD – not taken

Regards,
Paul (Captain)
(Last game of the season is at Oxley on the 4th December 6.36am tee)

Keperra game 06.11.2011

13 players attended the Keperra game, hot weather was on hand to sap the strength of the group especially over the last few holes, with the slog up the face of Mt 18th just about killing me off.

Well old crooked finger (Ian) was back & ready and able to kill off any late season challengers to his title, the only person close enough to tie the table is Owen, this would mean he would have to win every point on offer (all Long drives, NTP and highest point score on each day)

However if Ian just turns up to play then he will keep the “Fed Up” Cup for another year.
A note of caution to Ian: if you pass by Owens window on campus, keep your eye out for falling objects.

Many thanks to all those who turned up, I hope to see lots of you for the penultimate game of the year in less than two weeks time.

Here are the results:

1st place on 40pts – Ian Smith
2nd place on 39pts – Tom Boyd
3rd place on 35pts – Mark Coster

NTP on the 6th – Janine Walker
NTP on the 8th – Ian Smith
MLD – Owen Wright
LLD – not taken

Regards,
Paul (Captain)
(Next game is Wynnum on the 20th November 6.30am tee)

Golf: 6 November at Keperra Country Golf Club

Hello everyone

Wonderful day of golf at Gailes...once again a beautiful day with an outcome reaffirming my faith in the game (not just my win, but four players on 35 same points score vying for second). Well done everyone.

Hopefully another sunny day will present itself for the next round of the 2011 season. This round is at Keperra Country Golf Club on Sunday 6 November, arrival at 6.40am for tee-off at 6.56am (and no, the nice lady would not concede 4 minutes so I could say 7.00am in this email – which would have sounded so much better). Nevertheless we are scheduled (at this stage) to play holes 1-18, the well kept part of the course!!

The address is 44 Duggan Street, Keperra. The number for the Pro-shop is 3355 7744 if you wish to book a cart.

Directions from Petrie Terrace, Brisbane City are, proceed on Petrie Terrace for approximately 1 km heading northwest, then bear left into Samford Road. Follow Samford Road for approximately 5 km. Then turn right into Gilston Street. Follow Gilston Street for another 5 km (there is a roundabout approximately 4.5 km along this road – when you reach the roundabout bear left at first exit to stay in Gilston Street). See the map below for some detail (care of the Carbrook Golf Club website). Continue into Mooney Street (this is about 100m), then turn left into Duggan Street. Keperra GC is at the end of Duggan Street, approximately 200m. At that time of morning (with all the stars in alignment and a keen sense of direction) the trip from the City should take about 20-25 minutes.

Please email (or call) as soon as possible as I need to organise numbers with Keperra one (1) week prior to the game. Remember to check the club blog for news.

Yours,

Owen

Gailes game 09.10.2011

13 players attended the Gailes game, on a lovely October day, many were glad (myself included) that the rain from the previous day had made the bunkers unplayable.

With the top three players from the league missing (Ian, Mark & Rodney) two of them sporting injuries, the field was open for someone to make a move up the ladder.
Owen took advantage with a three point win over his next four (4) rivals on the day whom all scored 35pts. With some quick count back calculations by Ken we arrived at a top three.
The league table has changed quite a lot since September; I think Ian, Mark & Rodney may wish to get back in the field asap injuries permitting.
Many thanks to all those who turned up, I hope to see lots of you in the next round.

Here are the results:

1st place on 38pts – Owen Wright
2nd place on 35pts – Janine Walker
3rd place on 35pts – Fred Hill
(Also on 35pts, Jane Hughes and Dan Williams)

NTP on the 3rd – Jane Hughes
NTP on the 12th – Neville Nobody
MLD on the 18th – Dan Williams
LLD– on the 18th – Karen Greedy

Regards,
Paul (Captain)
(Next game is Keperra on the 6th November 6.56pm tee)

Next game: 9 October at Gailes Golf Club

The next game is at Gailes Golf Club on Sunday 9 October, arrival at 7.15am for tee-off at 7.30am.  The address is 229 Wilruna Street, Wacol, opposite Gailes Railway Station.  The number of the Pro Shop is 3271 1045 if you wish to book a cart.

To get there from the city, take the Ipswich Motorway and exit at Progress Rd, Wacol, cross the motorway and railway line, and turn left into Wilruna St.  To get there from the east (Sunnybank/Algester), take Learoyd Rd - Inala Ave - Progress Rd and follow the above directions.  If you come along Logan Motorway, I have no idea how you cross Ipswich Motorway, you're on your own - players attempting this route have been lost never to be seen again!

Please email or call me as soon as possible to let me know if you are playing in the this game so I can inform the Gailes Pro Shop of the numbers.

Carbrook game - 11 September 2011

While I remember...

Twelve hardy souls ventured out to Carbrook at a sleep-depriving hour on a cold and windy morning, only to have to wait while two or three other groups teed off late before us. Eventually we teed off ourselves, only to discover it was colder and windier on the fairway than on the tee. Fortunately the weather - if not the golf - warmed up; after 6 holes the first sweaters came off, after 12 holes the second sweaters came off, after 18 holes we were feeling a bit warm and bothered and sunburnt, at least I was.

The so-called leading group somehow managed to get lost - which required us to improvise with the NTP and LD competitions - and rejoined the procession at the back many holes later.

The scores were disappointing after last month. Perhaps Carbrook is just more difficult than Royal Pines. Perhaps it was playing the harder nine first. Perhaps it was the wind. Perhaps it was the true but fast greens which require familiarity to navigate successfully. Perhaps it was the bunkers which even I admit are pretty poor.

Owen Wright and I had a ding-dong battle all day, but my 4 for 4 on the par 4 6th (our 15th) apparently broke his spirit!

Anyway, when the dust settled, these were the results:

NTP #2 - Ashutosh Misra
NTP #7 - Ian Smith
Ladies LD (on #5) - Judith Chapman
Mens LD (on #5) - Dan Williams

3rd place on 33 points - Ashutosh Misra
2nd place on 34 points - Ian Smith
1st place on 38 points - Rodney Topor

OK, I had a home ground advantage, that might have helped, but this was the first time I've played to my handicap in I don't know how long.

The next game will be at Gailes on 9 October.

The updated league table will be posted later.

Royal Pines Photos

The players (without Andrew, away practising):

(Remind me not to position subjects facing the sun next time...)

The happy shield winners, Mark and Ash:

It's important to note that, although Paul and Owen thought they were doing ... OK ... with 42 points, they actually came DFL!!! That will no doubt inspire them to do better at Carbrook next month.

Royal Pines Resort 14.08.2011

A fine day for a trip down the coast to the annual shield game at Royal Pines Resort.

Fifteen players made journey for the 4BBB stableford event and judging by the scores everyone had a decent day on the course which was, as per usual in very nice condition.

I’m glad I had Ash as my floating partner for the front nine, but on the back nine he and I couldn’t get it right (both failing on the same holes), but he did blend well with his other partner Mark Coster and it was this team that was successful in placing their names on the shield this year.
There were only 8 points splitting the entire field at the end of the day, so hopefully everyone had a few highlights.

Also good to see a few family and friends turning out, hopefully they all enjoyed the day and may grace us with their presence again soon.

A good lunch was provided by the club which was appreciated, especially the pies. Could it get much better than this? (Well yes, I could have played better, but I can’t blame anyone for that except myself.) Thanks to all for turning up, hope many of you get together for the next game at Carbrook on the 11th September.

I’ll see you at the one after that.

Here are the results:

1st place on 50pts – Ashutosh Misra and Mark Coster
2nd place on 47pts – Sudath Wijeratne and Ian Smith
3rd place on 47pts – Christian Kelly and Jim Abbott

NTP on the 7th – Ashutosh Misra
NTP on the 14th – Ian Smith
MLD on the 18th – Sudath Wijeratne
LLD– on the 18th – Jane Hughes

Regards,
Paul (Captain)

Four Ball Best Ball Stableford
: Guidelines for Sunday 14 August 2011

The Stableford system is used for this competition. However, in 4BBB Stableford two players play as partners although the hole is played by each of them, using their individual full handicaps. At the conclusion of the hole, that player recording the highest number of points has his or her score entered on the card. If both partners score equally on the hole, the score of the player who first completed the hole will be recorded.

There is no need to record both scores since only the best score is required, as the competition name applies. The winner is determined by adding the scores for each nine holes and totalling for eighteen holes. The team with the most points is the winner.

To speed up the game, it is customary practice for players to pick up their ball once it is impossible for them to exceed their partner's score.

4BBB Stableford can be played as a mixed, members or ladies event. Ladies use their own tees and scorecard conditions.

Golf: 14 August at Royal Pines (RACV) Resort

Hello everyone

A great day of golf at Nudgee...everyone seemed to enjoy the day (even the grumpy ones who were held up!!!) ...combined with some controversial scorings by our illustrious Captain – perhaps a fitting end to the putting competition.

I’m sure everyone is looking forward to another sunny day for the next round of the 2011 season. This round is at Royal Pines Resort (Ladies Masters course) on Sunday 14 August, arrival at 8.10am for tee-off at 8.40am. These late starts are wonderful!

The address is Ross Street, Ashmore. The number is 1800 886 880. However, carts are booked and represent a part of the $60 per head fee for the club.

Directions from Brisbane City are, enter the M1 motorway and proceed approximately 70kms toward the Gold Coast. Take Exit 71 (Nerang-Broadbeach Rd) and merge heading toward Broadbeach. Drive about 4kms and turn left into Birmingham Rd. Birmingham Rd becomes Ross Street (a quirk of city planning!!) after about 300 metres. Follow Ross Street for about 1km and turn left into Royal Pines Resort (this entrance loops back up over Ross Street). Follow the signs to the Golf Pro Shop. Remember to stop at what I call the golf valet service. The friendly staff will whisk away your bag for loading to your cart....very nice!!!

This is a member only competition, so first in best dressed. We have a capacity of 20 for this round so we can invite guests once member numbers are finalised. I look forward to hearing from you soon and remember to check the club blog for news updates.

Yours,
Owen
