Oxley game 1st December 2013

Oxley game 1st December 2013.

18 players came out with their collective Christmas cheer, for the final round for 2013.
A beautiful day on what I thought was a very nice course condition (I prefer slightly slower greens unlike some semi-pros in our club who don’t get scared on the quick ones) judging by the high scores the yellow tee’s certainly assisted some players, I’m sure Ken will have a little bit of fun with those handicaps ready for 2014.

Here are the results for Oxley:
NTP 5th hole – not taken.
NTP 9th hole – Ian Smith.
Long drive 17th (m) Ian Smith
Long Drive 17th (f) Judith Chapman (making a habit of this)

1st place on 46 points – Dan Williams.
2nd place on 42 points – Dave Coster.
3rd place on 39 points – Howard Ward.
4th on count-back place also on 39 points – Ashutosh Misra.

The upshot of the above results meant that we were able to crown our new champion golfer for 2013 who has shown us a few of us where we would like to be with our games (if we were 30years younger and had an ounce of talent) therefore it is with great pleasure I announce:

Troy Grimshaw – the 2013 GUSGC champion.
Runner up – Dan Williams
3rd place – Ashutosh Misra.

Congratulations to all three of them, we look forward to battle re-commencing in the New Year.
A big thanks to all other players who came out for a game this year, making it one of our best attended ones for some time.

A very Merry Christmas and a Happy New year to you all.

Next game is the First one for the 2014 season is Mt Warren Park on the 7th of February.

Regards Captain Paul

Wynnum game 17th November 2013

Wynnum game 17th November 2013
16 players was a very good turnout for what could have been a wet & stormy day considering the conditions we have been suffering lately, but thanks to the good golfing gods, we were left with a dry course in an average  state (greens were a bit poor I thought)

It looks like Ian has got the dodgy back under control (did anyone see him popping pills or spending a prolonged time in the toilets) I think it’s high time we introduced drug testing for the club. The only problem would be finding the traces of little blue ones that men of a certain age (covers most of our lot) are taking.

From what I saw of the cards I think most had reasonable games, with I think 4 or 5 getting 36 or more points, well done to you all.

Here are the results for Wynnum:
NTP 6th hole – Rodney Topor.
NTP 16th hole – Ian Smith.
Long drive 12th (m) Ian Smith (good to see you back)
Long Drive 12th (f) Judith Chapman.

1st place on 39 points – Ian Smith.
2nd place on 38 points – Rodney Topor.
3rd place on 37 points – Ashutosh Misra.

Next game is the last one for the season (Oxley on the 1st December) don’t forget the Christmas theme.
The table shows the cup isn’t quite decided yet, but it would take a supreme effort by either Ash to stop the Troy juggernaut. So be there for the David vs Goliath battle day.

Regards
Captain Paul

Nudgee South game 6th October 2013.

Nudgee South game 6th October 2013.

10 players rolled up for the latest instalment of the “fed up cup” on a very warm (33 degree’s I think) day, thankfully the humidity hasn’t kicked in yet this year, but look out when it does.

The plan for Ken to disrupt Troy’s seemingly unstoppable march to the title this year had reasonable effect in that we didn’t see his name on the first two spot prize markers (but he did grab a NTP on the 16th) and also to Ken’s credit he did also beat Troy for second place overall.

I believe most (but not all) had reasonable games, but it was the lure of the scratch card wager between Rodney & myself that seemed to spur Rodney on to some of his best tee to green golf for quite some time (could the Uni please pay him a little more, the boy is obviously close to destitution if he has to make ends meet by scamming his fellow competitors for a 10 dollar scratchie) well done Rodney.

Here are the results for Nudgee South:
NTP 7th hole – not taken.
NTP 16th hole – Troy Grimshaw.
Long drive (m) Ian Smith (good to see you back)
Long Drive (f) Karen Greedy.

1st place on 42 points – Rodney Topor.
2nd place on 40 points – Ken Greedy.
3rd place on 39 points – Troy Grimshaw (72 off the stick, well done)

There is a game in December at Oxley (as always) at which we are requested to wear/show something a little festive (I may just bring an empty wallet that’s normal for Christmas isn’t it?) but that’s for the game after the next one, which is: Wynnum on the 17th of November with a 7.46 tee time. Hope to see as many of you there as possible we’ve all got a few weeks to practice, I know I will be, even if it just saves me from being out by $10 the next time I meet Rodney.

Regards Captain Paul.

Carbrook Game 22nd September 2013.

Carbrook Game 22nd September 2013.

With a reduced field due to holidays (x4), injuries (x2) other sporting commitments (x1) and other non-specifics (x?), we still managed 8 players for the game at the difficult home of the shark.

A warm day which dried out the greens quickly and made them (for this player anyway) nightmarishly fast, it was the forward group who seemed to handle the conditions better with the three places resting with them.

Well done to all of them.

Here are the results:

1st place on 36pts (after count back) Ashutosh Misra
2nd place on 36pts Karen Greedy
3rd place on 34pts Rodney Topor

Ntp on the 7th Peter Johnston
Ntp on the 14th not taken
Men’s L/D on the 4th Dan Williams
Ladies L/D on the 4th Karen Greedy

I’m late writing this report so it won’t be posted until after the next game (Nudgee)

Hello folks, thanks to the 13 who came to play at Redcliffe.

I’m sorry I’ll have to be short and sweet & just get to the results, although I must make mention of Dave Coster's win.  I think it’s his breakthrough one for the tour & something he can tell Mark about when he sees him in NY. well done Dave and indeed well done to all place getters & prize winners.

Here are the results for Redcliffe:

1st place on 39pts – Dave Coster
2nd place on 38pts – Troy Grimshaw
3rd place on 34pts – Karen Greedy

NTP on the 11th – Troy Grimshaw
NTP on the 13th – Troy Grimshaw
Men’s L/D 9th – Ken Greedy
Ladies L/D 9th – not taken

Next game we will be at Carbrook on the 22nd September, I look forward to seeing you there.

Paul (Captain)

Shield Game at Mt Tamborine 18th August 2013.

Well I thought the drive up to the Mt Tamborine course was hilly, little did I know what we we’re in for on the summit.

I thought I heard the Von Trapp family singing in the distance.

The course was in a good condition I thought (very green) but the constant up hill & down dale bit got a bit tiring after a while, still a good work out if we needed it.

The first placegetters played very well together with someone always managing to pull of the miracle shot  (especially you Mrs Chapman) to get them out of the poo, well done to the three of you, you’re now the Shield holder for a year and your names will go down in history.

Sorry Troy, my putter (and it was the only club I needed for most of the round of course) let us down right at the end, but we gave them a good game anyway and it was good to be on the same team as those huge drives for a change, I never knew you had to walk so far between shots.

I didn’t get to ask too much about other people’s games as we we’re all stuffing our faces, but we can all give feedback to Judith & George as to whether the course stays on the calendar or not for next year (bit of a hike to get to unfortunately) Hope you all enjoyed it anyway, see you soon in September.

Here are the results for the Shield game:

1st place on 60 & 2/3 nett – Dan Williams, Judith Chapman and Phil Dawson

2nd place on 61 & 1/2 nett – Troy Grimshaw & Paul Lockwood-Lee

3rd place on ... ~67? – Ashutosh Misra & George Chapman

NTP on the 5th – Dan Williams

NTP on the 15th – Troy Grimshaw

Men’s L/D 12th – Troy Grimshaw

Ladies L/D 12th – Judith Chapman

Next game we will be at Redcliffe on the 8th of September at 8.25am.

Paul (Captain)

Gailes Game 14th July 2013

Gailes Game 14th July 2013

Eleven braved the elements on Sunday, which was our lowest number for the year I think, but given the weather conditions it wasn’t a bad number, so thanks to all of you for your keen, if not misguided desire to play golf at all costs.

As it turned out from the point of view of the little group I was playing in, we all enjoyed the day, now we are not mudlarks nor ducks & we certainly didn’t think too much of some of the greens, but I think it was the fact that the air wasn’t blue of screams of displeasure at Drives going wildly off course, duffed chips & missed putts, it just seemed so peaceful out there. On a totally separate note “Get well soon Ken”.

Now the scores weren’t great as you’d imagine due to the conditions but Dan did manage to bring it home without any chance of being knobbled by the handicapper by getting a bang on 36pts. Well done Dan.

Nice to see Owen again, although he’s going AWOL again very quickly and thought he’d just pop in to get a point on the board until his next game near the end of the season.

There are signs of a break at the top end of the table starting to appear, with Troy, Dan and Ash sneaking the points on a fairly consistent basis, I see it as the duty of all the rest of us to try to put a stop to this blatant grab for glory, I’m advocating heavy praise part way through their games, regular showing of their great score cards to each of them and of course as much Velcro, zipping and coughing noises as possible.

Here are the results for Gailes:
1st place on 36pts – Dan Williams
2nd place on 32pts – Howard Ward
3rd place on 31pts – David Coster

NTP on the 3rd – Dan Williams
NTP on the 12th – Owen Wright
Men’s L/D 18th – Ashutosh Misra
Ladies L/D 18th – Karen Greedy

Next game we will be the Shield Game at Mt Tamborine on the 18th of August, If nobody has any objections I’ll do the High/Low draw handicapper mix for the teams (but if you do wish to play in the same group as someone else not necessarily the same team) just let me know.

Regards,
Paul (Captain)

Hills International, Jimboomba game June 16th 2013.

The Fab 4 hit the country.

Well it was just like the return of the Fab 4 to Australia, with Troy (John L) Dan (Paul Mc) Ash (George H) & Ken (Ringo) taking the country by storm again, with a four way split (all on 37 points) well done gents, it just seems so unfair that one person gets 5 points on the table & Ringo only gets one. I’m sure he’ll have a chuckle to himself whilst adjusting the handicaps.

15 was a very good showing for our venture to Jimboomba, so a big thanks to all of you for putting the effort in especially as the temperature was on the low side during the first hour or so.
The course I think pleased all players and despite offering no bail out positions on some of the water holes Judith was managing some great shots to clear the dreaded wet stuff & says she’d like lots more like it in the future.

Jimboomba I think from the general talk will be on the calendar for next year, I just hope that the yellow markers are in play again, if you stood on some of those tee’s & looked backwards to the white tees it started to look a bit spooky & how anyone could play off the blue ones, I don’t know?

Here are the results for Hills:

1st place on 37pts – Troy Grimshaw
2nd place on 37pts – Dan Williams
3rd place on 37pts – Ashutosh Misra
(Missing out on count back for 3rd was Ken Greedy)

NTP on the 8th – Ian Smith
NTP on the 13th – David Coster
Men’s L/D 18th – Ian Smith
Ladies L/D 18th – not taken

Next game we will storm Gailes in celebration of Bastille Day on the 14th of July. (Bring a baguette to put your clubette’s in)

Regards,
Paul (Captain)

P.S. We had an approach from the club marshal on the day stating he had to give a couple of our groups the hurry along as they were holding up the field. Can we all please be mindful of the time we take please & don’t forget:
Pick up your ball if you cannot score,
Walk briskly to your ball & if possible prepare whilst your partners are playing (pick the right club, pick your line etc) & be ready to hit as soon as it is your turn.
When putting please make as many guesstimates for length & line as soon as you get to the green (not just when it’s your turn to putt) only be aware that you do not disturb the player putting at the time.
When approaching the green work out where the next hole starts & put your bags toward the next logical exit of the green, so that you do not have to walk back to the front of the green to pick it up when your group has finished (this means you have cleared the green quicker & the group behind can play on)

I’m sure there are many more, but basically try to keep up with the group in front & we won’t go far wrong.

Thanks.

Improving the Pace of Play

In having a quite small membership of our social club we are quite fortunate.
We do not have to wait for hours after our round for the final group to finish and we can usually get around the course quite briskly, get the presentations done, then get on with our Sunday.
Speeding up the pace of play is a huge problem for the professional tours. That is probably understandable where Professional's income is on the line. It should not be a problem for amateur players and absolutely should not be a problem for our social golf club.
It is not a huge problem for our members, however there is no doubt that we can be guilty on occasions.
The USGA has launched a "While We're Young" campaign featuring Annika Sorenstam, Paula Creamer, Arnold Palmer, Tiger Woods and Clint Eastwood. Have a look at the videos :-). They offer some useful tips to speed up the play.

For our club, I think the main things we can do are:
  • Speak up - let players know (in a polite way) that the player or the group needs to speed up.
  • Pick up your ball - there is a reason we are playing stableford and not stroke. If you can't score on a hole, there is no shame in picking your ball up and assisting your group finish the hole. "I need the practice" is not a reasonable excuse - that should happen away from our social event.
Let's not turn this into an issue for the club.

WINDAROO game 20th MAY 2013

WINDAROO  game 20th MAY 2013

16 turned out for Windaroo game, which I think is our best for the year. A chilly start but a very pleasant autumn day followed.
The course was a tough taskmaster, which seemed to play longer than the yardage implies and greens without a flat spot to be found, I don’t think M C Escher could have drawn them any better, balls would roll miles uphill or nowhere downhill & never in the direction you would be expecting.
It still made for a good day, with everyone possibly happy when they heard the stories of suffering from other groups, that they weren’t the only ones to lose out at the hands of the Windaroo designer.

A very big thank you to Judith (with able support from George) who has volunteered to take on the secretary role for the club, I’ll pass on all the details I have thus far & I’m sure previous holders of the position will assist her as she finds her feet. (I’ll do the round up for the next game & then handover)

Here are the results for Windaroo:

1st place on 32pts – Rodney Topor
2nd place on 29pts – Ashutosh Misra
3rd place on 27pts – Troy Grimshaw
(missing out on count back for 3rd were Bryan Kendall & Myself)

NTP on the 5th – Paul Lockwood-Lee (sorry Hilary)
NTP on the 15th – Rodney Topor
Men’s L/D 13th – George Chapman
Ladies L/D 13th – Janine Walker

Next game is at Hills International on the 16th of June.

Regards,
Paul (Captain)

Public Holiday - Adam Scott Day

McLeod

McLeod

14 turned out for McLeod game in glorious weather, that I wasn’t expecting after the downpours the day before, so even with the low parts of the course being a bit damp I thought on the whole it was a good day for golfing.

Nice to see George & Ken back on the podium and a very good performance by Ash who will see his handicap falling after a runaway win, 6 points clear of the rest of the field. He’s been tweaked a little on his driving & it certainly paid dividends, well done Ash.

We gentlemen of the club are going to have to try really hard this year for the NTP & LD prizes with two now familiar faces grabbing the points again (more coughing, bag zipper, Velcro glove & anything noises you care to introduce to the Tee box as they are ready to take their shots please) Failing that non lethal force is acceptable.

Here are the results for McLeod:

1st place on 41pts – Ashutosh Misra

2nd place on 35pts – George Chapman

3rd place on 32pts – Ken Greedy

NTP on the 6thTroy Grimshaw

NTP on the 16ththN/A

Men’s L/D 9thIan Smith

Ladies L/D 9thKaren Greedy

Next game is at Windaroo on the 19th of May. (8.20am tee off)
