President's message 2014

Now that we have finished for 2014 and crowned a new "Champion" - and I use that term very loosely - just a quick message of thanks to all involved in the Club this year.

Thanks to George and Judith for organising our schedule. I thought there wasn't a bad course out there this year and am looking forward to playing Wantima in the new year. Just checking my passport is still valid for travel to the northside.

Thanks to Karen for collecting the money after each round. I mostly got change when I gave her $50 and she didn't complain too much. [Also, well played Karen! Played some great golf when I was in her group.]

Thanks to Ken for the handicapping - loving that slope system!

Thanks to Paul for captaining again. We'd be lost without your enthusiasm and organising on the day. Much like when Mark won in 2012, it's very hard to feel aggrieved at the the club champion when the winner is clearly the most improved golfer of the year. 4 wins out of 10 events can't be a fluke. Congratulations.

And thank to all the members who continue to maintain the easy going spirit of the club whilst upholding the best traditions of golf as a sport that anyone can play. Feel free to encourage other like-minded colleagues/friends to play next year.

Look forward to seeing you all in 2015.

Ian Smith

Oxley game 7th December 2014

Oxley game 7th December 2014

15 players for the final game, a great turn out as it happens considering the doom & gloom weather forecasts for the day and in the end we didn’t even get wet feet!
The course was in good condition (although the greens were very hard to judge I thought, perhaps it was just me) the worst you could say was it was very sticky out there.
Ian, Peter & George were all very close on the leader board with the returning (older & more knackered) Ian coming out on top, well done all of you.

Here are the full results for Oxley:

1st place on 37pts – Ian Smith
2nd place on 36pts – Peter Johnson
3rd place on 36pts – George Chapman

NTP on the 5th – not taken
NTP on the 9th – Ian Smith
Men’s L/D 17th – Dan Williams
Ladies L/D 17th – Judith Chapman

Which all means that the final day had a bearing on the Championship table by moving Mr Smith into 3rd overall for the year, second place went to Karen Greedy with whom I’ve had ding dong battle all year round. Well done Karen scoring points in six rounds is very good & shows how well you can play without the burden of broken Ken, sorry! But he’s back in your group next year (nobody else can take the abuse)
So as you already know it’s me who has taken out the cup for this year (by my sorry standards I had a good year) but done worry, I’ll vanish into obscurity next year my nerves won’t take another year like this.

The final championship standings for 2014:
Champion - Paul Lockwood-Lee -36 points
Runner up - Karen Greedy – 31points
3rd place Ian Smith – 25 points

Wishing all of you a very pleasant Christmas & New Year & those of you who are carrying injuries a full recovery for the new season which will start on Feb 15th at Wantima.
Thanks to all of you no matter how often you’ve played this year, you are all very welcome back in 2015 just keep your hands off my trophy.

Regards,
Paul (Captain)

Carbrook game 9th Nov 2014

Carbrook game 9th Nov 2014

10 hardy souls made it to the Carbrook game, some scared off by the sharks, some the lack of carts, others through injury but what really took a toll was the heat, I think most of us would have stopped around 15 holes if we could & this is without the humidity, we had better watch out at Oxley if we get a little rain soon.
A good game was had by most players with a close battle at the top with four players within one shot of each other, helped no doubt by the fact the course was in very good condition.
I know George was going well, but I think he exhausted himself after having to take a very long walk on the 16th   but he did get both NTP’s so well done George for a good day all round.
Here are the results for Carbrook:
1st place on 37pts – Paul Lockwood-Lee
2nd place on 37pts – Bryan Kendall (missed 1st on count-back)
3rd place on 36pts – Karen Greedy
(= 3rd missing out on count-back – George Chapman)

NTP on the 7rd – George Chapman
NTP on the 14th – George Chapman
Men’s L/D  – Nigel Stork
Ladies L/D  – Karen Greedy

Next game is at Oxley on the 7th of December about 7.00am.
Regards,
Paul (Captain)

Nudgee Game 26 October 2014

Nudgee Game 26 October 2014

Thanks to the 15 who turned up for the new mystery course that is Nudgee South, the combined hot weather, Smokey air and enforced building site layout couldn’t prevent the usual high stableford points scores that we associate with Nudgee South.

Best of all was the local knowledge guru Janine, won the day and set the NTP hole, which she promptly also won.

Honourable mention must go to Mark C, who was playing off a 2 point penalty (for his win last time out) & still managed a second place.

Here are the results for Nudgee:

1st place on 44pts – Janine Walker

2nd place on 43pts – Mark Coster

3rd place on 39pts – Dan Williams

(= 3rd missing out on count-back – Fred Hill)

NTP on the 3rd – Janine Walker

NTP on the 15th – Jane Hughes

Men’s L/D  – Phil Dawson

Ladies L/D  – Karen Greed

Next game is at Carbrook on the 9th of November (hardly worth getting the clubs out of the car from this weekend) about 7.00am.

Regards,

Paul (Captain)

Redland bay game 14 September 2014.

Redland bay game 14 September 2014

A smaller field of only eleven players made it to a very good Redland Bay course on a very nice day for golf. I hope everybody hit a few good ones to bring them back next time (forget about the bad ones they don’t really count, I certainly never count mine)

Mark Coster got back into the winners circle for the first time this year,
Which was pleasing to see (as long as you don’t think you’ll be doing it again for a while) and it was a return to the podium for the perennial point scorers Ian & Dan, well done gents.

Here are the full results for Redland bay:

1st place on 39pts – Mark Coster
2nd place on 38pts – Ian Smith
3rd place on 36pts – Dan Willams

NTP on the 6th – Nigel Stork
NTP on the 16th – Ian Smith
Men’s L/D 18th – Dan Williams
Ladies L/D 18th – Karen Greedy

Next game is at Nudgee South on the 26th of October at 7.50am.
The round up call will be put out by either Ian or myself, so keep your eyes on the in-box.

Regards,
Paul (Captain)

Gainsborough Greens – Shield Game 2014

Gainsborough Greens – Shield Game 2014

The big question for this game was how many would turn up? After a wild night of weather on Saturday and the forecast suggesting lots more for the Sunday (game day) I was feeling a bit lonely for a while until some headlights started to appear in the car-park.
Well we did end up with 10 players (big thanks to you all) and the rain was the main absentee (thanks to the big guy in the sky or the met office, whichever you believe in.

A random draw took place, as we only had one low handicapper with us, and the teams set out on the soggy but in the circumstances pretty good condition course.

The team of Ian & Phil came in first by the proverbial country mile, and are now the proud holders of the shield for the coming year (good luck fitting your names on the thing).

Thanks to Gainsborough for only charging us for the attendees and for the very good lunch afterwards, I think a definite possible for the same next year.
And thanks to the club for the subsidised rate for this one off game in our busy season.

Here are the full results for Gainborough:

1st place on a score of 61.5 nett – Ian Smith & Phil Dawson
2nd place on a score of 66 nett – Karen Greedy & Mark Coster
3rd place on a score of 68 nett – Dan Williams & Peter Johnston
4th place on a score of 70 nett – George Chapman & Paul Lockwood-Lee
5th place on a score of 84.5 nett – Judith Chapman & Dave Coster

NTP on the 3rd – not taken
NTP on the 15th – Mark Coster
Men’s L/D 4th – Mark Coster
Ladies L/D 4th – not taken

(Shield game has no bearing on the league table as it’s a stand alone event)

The next game for the club championship is Redland Bay on the 14th of September – 7.00pm tee off.

Paul (Captain)
