Oxley game December 2012 (last game in the 2012 Fed Up Cup)

Oxley game December 2012 (last game in the 2012 Fed Up Cup)

13 braved potential heat exhaustion for our traditional last game of the season – The Race to Oxley to decide the Fed Up Cup for 2012.

When the end came two players were just too good for the rest of us in their quest for the cup: the reigning champ (Ian Smith) and one of our most improved players for the year (Mark Coster).   A notable mention goes to Fred Hill, who had a very good day as well, but was not in the cup running (but look out if he gets more games in).

Here are the results for Oxley:

1st place on pts – 39pts Ian Smith (on count back)
2nd place on pts – 39pts Fred Hill
3rd place on pts – 34pts Mark Coster (on count back)
(Owen also on 34pts missed out on count back)

NTP on the 5th – Ian Smith
NTP on the 9th – Fred Hill
Men’s L/D 17th – Mark Coster
Ladies L/D 17th – Not taken

The upshot of the final game for 2012 is the new club champion is:
Mark Coster, who pipped Ian by the narrowest of margins.

Congratulations to Mark, who over the season has been consistently ticking the scoreboard over with: one first outright, one joint first in the special game, one second, two thirds and a missed third on count back, three NTP’s and two L/D’s.

Also the Coster Boys were the only two players who played every game of the season, so thanks for your commitment to the club (look out at committee nomination time)..

All that’s left to say to all of you is have a very merry Christmas and New Year, I hope to see you all as often as possible in the fight for the Fed Up Cup 2013.

Regards,
Paul (Captain)

Wynnum game Nov 2012

Another good turnout (14) came to the penultimate game of the season.

With greens that did no one any favours (apart from the ducks) it was a great advert for strong steady golf that took the best spots today, well that is for the first two placegetters anyway the unflappable Howard & the consistently consistent Mr Westover.

However as we all know from how quiet & serene the course was on the front nine, alas when the ground started to shake, the birds flew out of their trees & local mothers started to call their children indoors & put cotton wool in their ears, you knew the wheels had started to fall off on Ken’s game on the homeward bound nine (a great front nine though)

A good mix of players (7) getting their names on the honour roll this month, so well done to all of you.

Here are the results for Wynnum:
1st place on 42pts – Howard Ward
2nd place on 38pts – David Westover
3rd place on 37pts – Ken Greedy

NTP on the 6th – George Chapman
NTP on the 16th – Rodney Topor
Men’s L/D 12th – Ian Smith
Ladies L/D 12th – Karen Greedy

Paul (Captain)

(Next/Final game for the year, 2nd December, at Oxley)

PS For the Oxley game the intention is to send people in groups according to the league table, however this is not set in concrete, if you wish to play with anyone in particular then let me or Owen know either by email or on the day please?

Golf: 4 November at Wynnum Golf Club

Hello everyone

A great day of golf at Nudgee... a beautiful day, with everyone having a an excellent round. The table is now very close with Mark and Paul slugging it out in the final two rounds. We should not forget Ian, Rodney and Dan who could also come from behind to take the coveted trophy…very exciting!!

The next round is at Wynnum Golf Club on Sunday 4 November, arrival at 6.45am for tee-off at 7.03am. Yes, back to the early starts!!!

The address is 64 Stradbroke Avenue, Wynnum. The number for the Pro-shop is 3396 3546 if you wish to book a cart.

Nudgee (south course) October 2012

Nudgee (south course) October 2012

Our biggest turn out for the season came out to shoot some hot golf on Sunday.
Now traditionally Nudgee brings in the high stableford scores, but 8 players out of the group amassed 36pts or more points which by anyone’s measure is good going, so well done to all of you.
Ken says he won’t be savaging too many off peoples handicaps as Nudgee South has a low AGU rating, but let’s hope he takes Mark Coster to the cleaners after bringing it home with 46pts (now that’s just showing off, really well done Mark)
It was a lovely day for the weather and the golf, so I hope everyone enjoyed themselves so much that you’ll want to do it all again in about 3 weeks time at Wynnum (please get your responses in early to Owen when you get his email).
Here are the results for Nudgee:
1st place on 46pts – Mark Coster
2nd place on 43pts – Bryan Kendall
3rd place on 42pts – Paul Wright
(Equal 3rd but missed out on count back – Chris Walker)
NTP on the 3rd – Mark Coster
NTP on the 16th – Fred Hill

Men’s L/D 8th – Dan Williams
Ladies L/D 8th – Janine Walker
Regards,
Paul (Captain)
(Next game 4th November, at Wynnum)

Ps, I’m really not liking the look of the league table now.

Golf: 14 October at Nudgee Golf Club (South course)

Hello everyone

A great game at Carbrook (or so Paul says - and I'm sure he is a little biased). We are now at the back end of the season and I’m sure everyone is looking forward to another nice sunny day for the next round of the 2012 season...I know I am. A great chance to close the gap on the leader board. This round is at Nudgee Golf Club (South course) on Sunday 14 October, arrival at 7.30am for tee-off at 7.45am. I love these late starts!

The address is 1207 Nudgee Road, Nudgee. The number of the pro shop is 3267 5885 (for cart bookings).

To get there follow the Gateway motorway north from the Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges (nee  Gateway bridge). Approximately 9kms north of the Sir Leo Hielscher Bridges take the Nudgee Beach exit (where the Shell Service Station is located). Approximately 100 metres after exiting you will reach a t-intersection, this is Nudgee Road. Turn right into Nudgee Road. This will lead you back over the Gateway Motorway (approximately 500 metres). Once you have crossed over the motorway, entry into Nudgee GC is approximately 100 metres on your right. If you are heading in from the north, take the Nudgee Road exit and veer left into Nudgee Road. The entrance to the golf course is approximately 50 metres on your right. From the city I estimate the drive time to be about 20 minutes (at that time of morning). Please email me (or call) as soon as possible if you are attending the game so I can organise numbers with Nudgee. Remember to check the club blog for news.

Carbrook Game 23rd September 2012

Carbrook Game 23rd September 2012

Carbrook’s course was in very good nick as they had just finished the third round of their own championship and with fine weather it made for a nice days golfing.
The fact is folks I could wax lyrical about the conditions & the weather, the birds singing etc etc, but that’s only because I had a very good game, if I’d played poorly I’d be picking fault with everything about the day (too hot, greens too quick blah blah blah)
Good to see Jane back at her home course and playing well, also Rodney on his home course picking up his second long drive for the year (you just have to get it on the fairway and you stand every chance)
Also well done to Ian getting third (on reduced hcp for this game) Phil for picking his first NTP and Fred, who had an equal 3rd but missed out on count back.
I look forward to seeing you all (and more) for the trip over the river (take a packed lunch for the journey) next month.

Here are the results for Carbrook:
1st place on 38pts – Paul Lockwood-Lee

2nd place on 33pts – Jane Hughes

3rd place on 32pts – Ian Smith

(Equal 3rd but missed out on count back – Fred Hill)

NTP on the 7th – Phil Dawson

NTP on the 14th – not taken

Men’s L/D 4th – Rodney Topor

Ladies L/D 4th – Jane Hughes

Regards,

Paul (Captain)

(Next game 14th October, at Nudgee South)

Etiquette tip du jour: Don’t forget to put your rakes in the bunkers after use please.

Gainsborough Greens game 9th September 2012

Gainsborough Greens game 9th September 2012.

A very pleasant day was had by everyone at this our slotted in game (there is another one in two weeks time, with this amount of practice we’ll all be finely tuned pro’s soon).

Most people enjoyed the course, which seemed to play very fairly so long as you kept to the shorter stuff, the big problem I had (and I think some others) was the dreaded putter, with some very short ones going past the edge on way too many occasions.

The reigning club champion was back in form this for this game, with a very comfortable winning margin over the field (let’s hope Ken sorts him out for the next game, and make him play off scratch). Well done Ian, and all those who took home points and balls for this game.

Could I ask all those who think they may have a chance at winning any of the next few games to not practice please, the league table is getting a bit congested at the top & frankly I preferred it when my lead was much healthier, thanks.

Here are the results for Gainsborough:
1st place on 38pts – Ian Smith
2nd place on 31pts – Rodney Topor
3rd place on 30pts – Karen Greedy

NTP on the 3rd – Mark Coster
NTP on the 16th – not taken
Men’s L/D 5th – Ian Smith
Ladies L/D 5th – Karen Greedy

Take Exit 49 and proceed through the roundabout, and then take the second exit onto Yawalpah Road. Proceed along Yalwalpah Road for approximately 2 kms. Shield Game, Sanctuary Cove, August 19th 2012.

Shield Game, Sanctuary Cove, August 19th 2012

Wow! That seemed like a hard slog to me I’m not sure about the rest of you?

Sanctuary Cove lists itself as “Designed to challenge players of all abilities”. Well it certainly did that. Perhaps yellow tees may have been kinder, but that wouldn’t have helped with those hard fast non flat greens.

Myself, I hit shots I felt really good about, only to see them roll through, down into hollows, into traps/water, onto rough & back off the greens down the fairways.

In near perfect weather conditions, the course was the winner; the top scores were hard fought for, so well done to all those players whom tamed the beast.

Nearly all groups ended up within 3 points of each other so well done everyone & I hope you all enjoyed the random draw for this game. Don’t forget in the normal games if you have a preference for being in a particular group, I’ll always try to accommodate (just let me know pre-Tee off).

Did everyone enjoy the scenery on the long drives from car park/pro shop to 1st tee & then to car park & back to new club house (for the second class seating option) then back to your cars again?  There’s a good chunk of your lives you’re not getting back.

Here are the results for Sanctuary Cove:

1st place on 39pts – Dan Williams and Mark Coster
2nd place on 39pts – Rodney Topor and David Coster (after count back)
3rd place on 38pts – Karen Greedy and Owen “swinger” Wright

(Last year’s game as a comparison produced 50pts/47pts & 47pts, just to show how much harder this course was.)

NTP on the 6th – Chris Walker
NTP on the 16th – Ian Smith
Men’s L/D 12th – Ian Smith
Ladies L/D 12th – Jane Hughes

Paul (Captain)

IMPORTANT UPDATE Golf: 19 August at Sanctuary Cove Resort

Hello everyone

Just an update to the round at Sanctuary Cove Resort (the Palms course ) on Sunday 19 August, arrival at 7.10am for tee-off at 7.30am.

The address (I was rightly corrected by Rodney - who clearly takes notice of this stuff far more than I do!!) is Sanctuary Cove Golf and Country Cub: Vardon Lane, Hope Island. The number is 5699 9000. Carts are booked and represent a part of the $75 (the $80 I quoted in the previous email as incorrect - sorry!!!) per head fee for the club. We will also be subsidising 'paid up' members to the tune of $25 per head. Therefore, members green fees on the day will be $50 per head.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING DRESS CODE.

"Dress code must be adhered to at all times. All players must be dressed in neat, casual attire and a collared shirt is compulsory. Denim, cargo, singlets and brief shorts not permitted on the course."

Directions from Brisbane City are, enter the M1 motorway and proceed approximately 56kms toward the Gold Coast. Take Exit 57 (Tamborine/Oxenford Rd) and follow the signs to Hope Island. This will lead you to Santa Barbara Road. Follow this to the second roundabout (approx. 500 metres) then take the second exit to Sanctuary Cove Boulevard. After the next roundabout turn into Vardon Lane. Follow this for about 500 metres and turn left into the entrance of the Golf and Country Club. Follow the signs to the Golf Pro Shop and find parking nearby. Remember to park at what I call the golf valet service. The friendly staff will whisk away your bag for loading to your cart.

We currently have 12 people (with perhaps a couple more members joining up) so we can now invite guests. If anyone has any person they wish to invite please let me know asap (don't forget guests will pay the full $75). I look forward to hearing from you soon and remember to check the club blog for news updates.

Yours,
Owen

Gailes game 15th July 2012.

Gailes game 15th July 2012.

What is it they say about practice? Sorry folks but I did have four games in the week leading up to the Gailes game, so I hoped to be in a good position to be contending for prizes.

It was a lovely day for golfing considering the forecast was for rain, rain & more rain, the course was in great shape with only a few soggy areas.

I hope everyone enjoyed the day, I think the points on the cards indicate that it was better than the last two rounds we’ve played in June/May,And for the first time in a while all the prizes went out as well.

Thanks to all for turning out, I hope to see you all any many more for the Big One next month (it’s the shield game) I promise to be back to my old self by then.
Here are the results for Gailes:
1st place on 37pts – Paul Lockwood-Lee
2nd place on 36pts – Fred Hill
3rd place on 34pts – Karen Greedy

NTP on the 3rd – David Coster
NTP on the 12th – Howard ‘bikini wax’ Ward
Men’s L/D 18th – Rodney Topor
Ladies L/D 18th – Karen Greedy

Next game is the special at Sanctuary Cove on the 19th of August.

Pairs will be picked by a random draw, I will then try to arrange the groups to suit any requests.

Regards,
Paul (Captain)

Logan City game 17th June 2012

Logan City game 17th June 2012.

It seemed on the face of it that we were in for a nice stroll in the sun for the Logan game, but alas there must have been a much localised flood of biblical proportions recently as the greens were more browns & the fairways were decidedly unfair. This is unfortunate as Logan are always generous to social clubs and I’m sure are doing their very best with the course, they just battle hard against the flood plain that is Logan City Golf course.
Never mind we all didn’t want to sit at home & watch the US open unfold (Oh I forgot you can’t see that on normal TV, well done networks)

Needless to say the scoring was not the highest that we have had, perhaps instead of a four club game we should have had a four wheel drive game.
I hope everyone enjoyed the monster par 3 on the back nine (Ian measured it at 65mts)

It turned out to be another very close finish with only one point between the top six & the rest were not too far behind.
Well done to David Westover, his consistent swing & steady calm nerves took the prize when all around were losing it in the face of the Logan challenge.

Here are the results for Logan City:

1st place on 32pts – David Westover
2nd place on count back, 32pts – Paul Lockwood - Lee
3rd place on 31pts – Ian Smith
(Tied for third also on 31pts but missing out on count back: Chris Walker, Mark Coster and David Coster)

NTP on the 3rd – Not taken
NTP on the 17th – Not taken
Men’s L/D 16th – Mark Coster
Ladies L/D 16th – Not taken

Next game is at Gailes on the 15th of July.
Let’s hope for no rain, good playing conditions and Green Greens.

Paul (Captain)

Golf: 17 June at Logan City Golf Club (4 clubs only)

Hello everyone

Almost half way through the year with another round of the 2012 season upon us!! This game is at Logan City Golf Club on Sunday 17 June, arrival at 7.45am for tee-off at 8.00am.  In this round you are only permitted four (4) clubs including your putter (or whatever club you choose to use as putter). In this round you also receive 12 golf balls as part of the package (yippeeee!!).

The address is Golf Course Road, Meadowbrook. The number of the pro shop is 3299 6653 (for cart bookings). Please NOTE the contact number in the yearly schedule is incorrect!!

To get there, from Brisbane CBD head south on the M1 for approximately 23km. Then, take exit 24 to Loganlea Road, Meadowbrook. This is a new exit. When you exit the M1 and proceed under the overpass and loop back around to the overpass. Follow the signs to Loganlea Road.  Follow Loganlea Road toward Logan for approximately 1.5km. Turn left into Golf Course Drive. The entrance to the Club is approximately 300m from Loganlea Road. From the Gold Coast the exit number is the same (exit 24). Take the exit and proceed to Loganlea Road. All other directions are the same.

From the city I estimate the drive time to be about 20-30 minutes (at that time of morning).
Please email me (or call) as soon as possible if you are attending the game so I can organise numbers with the club.

Windaroo Game 20th May 2012.

Well it turned out to be a lovely day after a cool start with a classic Queensland Autumn/Winter sky. The birds were singing, the ducks were quacking & the air was blue (Ken was in the group in front of me) and from what I gather fun & laughter from Howard/Ian/Phil’s group, as I think Howard was having a meltdown (turned out he was wrong)

The little pre game confab before the game with committee members present proved to be useful, as the cards came back with ties for 1st & 3rd places.

If you missed it, the new count back system for ties is now worked on the fewer number of wipes on a card takes the higher place. Thanks to Ian for proposing that.

It was a low scoring game with I think most of us believing we had done worse than we had, but in reality the course was out to hurt us and did a pretty good job and Windaroo certainly can do that.

Sorry about the tough NTP (water carry) placements, but some of you were good enough to get the greens.

Here are the results for Windaroo:

1st place on 29pts – Paul Lockwood-Lee
2nd place on 29pts – Mark Coster
3rd place on 28pts – Karen Greedy
(Tied for third but missing out on count back: Dan Williams and Howard Ward)

NTP on the 15th – Owen Wright
NTP on the 7th – Karen Greedy
Men’s L/D 13th – Dan Williams
Ladies L/D 13th – Hilary Martyn

Next game is at Logan on the 17th of June.
It’s the four club game, so start thinking about your favourite mix of hitty sticks.

Paul (Captain)

McLeod Game 15th April 2012.

McLeod Game 15th April 2012.

When I woke up on Sunday morning & couldn’t see the sun, I had a feeling we would have a few no shows for this game (I can’t blame them)
But we did still manage our biggest group of the year thus far, 13 hardy souls (some may say foolish) so a big thanks to you all.

What a shame we don’t have a course of our own for the whole day, same as the majors, then when we get a situation like the three way tie for first place that we had at McLeod, we could send the three back down the 18th for a sudden death play-off.

But alas we do not have that facility so we have to resort to the old count back, which is a shame when all three battled so hard in the varying conditions throughout the morning.

Here are the results for McLeod:

1st place on 38pts – Dan Williams
2nd place on 38pts – David Coster
3rd place on 38pts – Ken Greedy

NTP on the 16th – Ken Greedy
NTP on the 6th – Dan Williams
Men’s L/D – Ken Greedy
Ladies L/D – Janine Walker

Next game is at Windaroo on the 20th of May.
Let’s hope for good weather and a big crowd as those who missed out must be eager for a game.
I’m already excited!

Paul (Captain)

Golf: 15 April at McLeod Country Club

Hello everyone

A great day of golf at Mt Warren Park, with some surprising results, but well done to those on the podium at the end of the day. I’m sure everyone is looking forward to sunny, and hopefully dry, day for the next round of the 2012 season. This round will be held at McLeod Country Club on Sunday 15 April, arrival at 7.15am for tee-off at 7.30am (I think that means we can sleep in a bit!

The address is 59 Gertrude-McLeod Crescent, Mt Ommaney. The number for the Pro-shop is 3376 3922 if you wish to book a cart.

Directions from Centenary Highway (coming from the north first) are, enter the M5 Western Motorway (this is at the Milton Road roundabout) and proceed approximately 9 kms heading south. Take the Mt Ommaney/Sinnamon Park exit on left. At the roundabout (at the top of the exit) take the 3rd exit onto Dandenong Road. Keep veering left to stay on Dandenong Road and proceed about 1.5 kms. Then turn right into Horizon Drive. Follow this about 700m to Gertrude McLeod Crescent. Once in the Crescent, the Club is on the right after about 600m. From Ipswich Road (heading north) enter the M5 Centenary Mwy and proceed north about 2.5kms. Take the Sumners Road exit heading toward Middle Park/Darra. At the roundabout (at the top of the exit) take the first exit to stay on Sumners Road. After 400m turn right onto Dandenong Road and proceed for about 450m. Turn left onto Horizon Drive. The remaining directions are the same as above.

Please email (or call) as soon as possible if you are attending the game so I can organise numbers with McLeod.

Mt Warren Park game 18th March 2012

Another group of 12 turned out for Mt Warren game, thank you to all those for turning up.
I’m just going to give you the results because as you may or maybe didn’t notice I couldn’t attend this game.
From what I’m told Peter Johnston had a very good game & judging by the scores I’ve seen the rest of the field may have gone pretty well also.
Congrats to you all, I hope the weather was kind to you.
[Ian's comment: "The weather looked terrible leading up to the day but turned out to be quite a pleasant day. Not much run, particularly if you were in the rough! Some very good scoring considering the conditions and Peter's score was remarkable.]

Golf: 18 March at Mt Warren Park Golf Club

Hello everyone

A great start to the year (albeit a little wet). But overall everyone had a great day at Virginia. Prizes were shared among a range of different people so no one ‘scooped the pool’. So, we should all be ready for another exciting round of the 2012 season. The next game is at Mt Warren Park Golf Club on Sunday 18 March, arrival at 6.45am for tee-off at 7.00am. A good time to start the day!!

The address is 13 Bardyn Halliday Drive, Mt Warren Park. The number of the pro shop is 3287 4000 (for cart bookings).

To get there, take exit 35 for (heading south on the M1) towards MAIN STREET. At the roundabout, take the 4th exit onto Rochester Drive heading to Beenleigh/Mount Warren Park. Immediately turn left onto Vermont Crescent. In about 400m turn left into Robert Stanley Drive, then in 500m turn left into Merrow Street. In about 200m, turn left into Bardyn Halliday Drive. The golf club is on the right towards the end of the road.

From the city I estimate the drive time to be about 30 minutes (at that time of morning).

Please email me (or call) as soon as possible if you are attending the game so I can organise numbers. Remember to check the club blog for news.
